celebrating the bold lines and unique aesthetic of modern mansards
Ballard Mansard 9
Quite the grand lady, these mansard apartments have a lot to share...three graceful mansard awnings, a grand staircase, and ornamental siding and shudders that would make any 1940s starlet happy. Built, 1943.
Modern Mansard is a blog that celebrates the modern revival of the mansard roof. The roof style was originally popularized by François Mansart in 17th century France and enjoyed a revival in the late 19th century. The mansard's most recent evolution occurred in the 1970s when the 'modern mansard' as I refer to it (also lovingly referred to as 'mushroom houses' by many) was born and became part of the 1970s design aesthetic.
Although I do not own a modern mansard myself, I am one of the many admirers around the world and enjoy collecting images and stories of extraordinary mansards here on this blog.
